95 Acres in Alpena County

This wild and remote sanctuary includes the western edge of Grass Lake. Unique plants grow in the alkaline soils of the area. Of geological interest is where Hamilton Road crosses exposed dolomite near the sanctuary entrance. Hamilton Road has the distinction of being the first Michigan Natural Beauty Road, a designation which was made possible by legislation first proposed by MNA.

From the time they became first-year members, Mr. and Mrs. Julius C. Peter were financial advisors and enthusiastic supporters who helped spread the word about MNA’s program to their friends. Julius and Marie were instrumental in gaining contributions that resulted in the purchase of several hundred acres of sanctuary lands.
