Location Details
The second project of MNA, Polovich Memorial, was established in 1963. Located off Cribbins Road in St. Clair County, Polovich Memorial contains a half-mile trail that provides visitors with access to the Pine River. The Pine River is a gentle river that is often lined with wildflowers including Dutchman Breeches, squirrel corn and fringed polygala.
The sanctuary was originally named after the Pine River, which flows through the property, and the whip-poor-wills that can be heard calling on summer nights. In 1978, the sanctuary was re-named the Stephen M. Polovich Memorial, in memory of the son of Ralph Polovich (a photographer who took many of the early MNA photographs; some of which include Stephen). Stephen died at the age of 19. He was an Eagle Scout, former president of his senior class at Port Huron High School, and an honor student at St. Clair County Community College. Stephen did volunteer work for MNA and worked on other nature-related projects.
